My Lisa 9: Doppelgänger
Lisa and I looked alike.
Starting in first grade everyone mixed us up. For years we wore our hair the same and dressed alike, laughing when people called us by the other’s name.
Her mom was young, and her dad was funny. I loved to hang out with Lisa’s family, pretending we were twins.
One summer we went to a camp together in North Carolina. We were not assigned to the same cabin, and I begged the camp director to move me into Lisa’s cabin without success. I couldn’t figure out why Lisa wasn’t upset about this split-up.
It took me years to realize that she had requested the separation and was “dropping” me that summer.
I still run into people who think I’m Lisa, andI return a polite “hello” without correcting them. I wonder if she does the same.
